This guide is all about how to update photo blocks on your Squarespace website.

IMPORTANT: Before getting started, be sure to have your new photos for your site ready (your Google ranking will thank you!).

What do I mean by ready?

Size them well and name them. ⤵️

  1. A good size for your photos for Squarespace is at least 1500px - 2000px. Anything smaller could appear blurry. Anything bigger could slow down your website and negatively impact your SEO.

  2. You’ll want to have named your new images named BEFORE they get uploaded to your Squarespace Asset Library. Unnamed images are a ding against your SEO. Named images help to boost your SEO. Before an image is given a name, it can look like this (or some other obscure name such as 2578.png)

Unnamed image - don't use! It will negatively impact your SEO.

What you want to do is give your image a name that both reflects the photo and that can help boost your SEO. For example, I named this photo for a counseling website for cognitive behavioral therapy, “Evelyn Grace cognitive behavioral therapist.png⤵️

Always name your photo before uploading to Squarespace.

Alright, now that you’ve saved all your new images with names, you’re ready to begin! ⤵️

Simple Steps to Update Squarespace Photos:

  1. Login to your Squarespace account and select which website is getting updated photos.

  2. Select the “EDIT” in the upper left hand corner of your screen:

3. Single click over the image block you want to change and select the pencil icon (or double clicking the image block will also bring up the menu of options to change the photo):

4. Select “REPLACE” then “UPLOAD FILE”.

5. You’ll notice that your new image has filled the previous Image Block’s shape. No worries…you can fix that. But first, update your “IMAGE ALT TEXT”.

What’s Image ALT Text?

It’s the field that describes what’s happening in your photo. Great for boosting your SEO. Also great for kindly making your image known to visually impaired users who come to your website. Devices can read aloud what you’ve labeled you’re Image Alt Text so all users can fully experience your website.

P.S. You’ll also notice here that if you forgot to name your photos ahead of starting this update process, there is a “FILENAME” section where you can rename your photo. (Thank you, Squarespace!)

6. Now you can resize your Image Block by single-clicking on your Image Block, and dragging the sides or corners.

7. Select “SAVE” on the upper left-hand corner of your screen, and that’s it! You’re done!

Well-done, friend! Pat yourself on the back and enjoy the new look you’ve just given your Squarespace Website.
